(More customer reviews)I got my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe about 5 years ago, and it's been going strong straight out of the box ever since. The only complaint I had was the Master Volume (drive volume) pot, which on the older models before this one would increase to about 90% by the time you hit 4 out of 12 on the knob. Fender's saying they updated for a graduated volume increase, and that's all this amp needed. The stock tubes are a great set and they're still working great --- I tried buying some different ones from Eurotubes and it really cut the tone and power of the amp.
I play mostly rock and roll, independent, garage, whatever you want to call it. I use a Mexican Telecaster with this, and the clean sound is awesome. The drive sounds are harder to tame (because of the volume problem I mentioned) but I'm going to have the amp modified to get the gradual volume increase. You can also just use distortion, overdrive, or fuzz pedals (I've used one of each kind with this) and they work great. The amp reverb is robust, but also kind of quick to increase on the pot.
If you're looking for more sound, there's a speaker line out where you can add an extension cabinet. I have an extra 1x12 speaker cab handy for big (or outdoor) performances, although you don't really need it with the output this amp does. In my opinion, the Hot Rod Devilles are overkill, and even adding another 12 onto this amp is overkill. The Hot Rod Deluxe is certainly powerful enough for anyone (unless you're doing a stadium tour, I guess).
