(More customer reviews). . . I think that's a fair assessment for the time being. I bought this amp after reading a few reviews (what are you nuts?). It does have tubes but is really a hybrid amp; the pre-amp section is solid state. AXL does post schematics on their site So let's get down to it . . .
The fit and finish is very good. Truth be known the copper plated knobs and control panel would not be my first choice now would the blond tolex. Black would have been better but I won't complain as I said it appears to be well made and well finished. the thousand screws and the grille on the back are overkill though. I guess their lawyers don't trust us not to get shocked.
Now I've heard that these are now being equipped with Russian tubes but that doesn't appear to be the case with mine. These look like 'China's Finest'. Rather than immediately replacing them I gave them a chance (remember those million screws? I may change them out to see if I can get the noise down but I'm not in too much of a hurry.
So how does it sound? Well, in the living room on the floor my first impression was it was a little noisy and the reverb is weak. It seemed to quiet down when the reverb was turned all the way down. When I got it to my rehearsal space (a garage) it actually sounded better. I have the amp elevated up at about waist height and it seems to project better. I also plugged in to a better surge suppressor. The reverb did not seem so noisy either (but was still weak). The tone and volume were good on the overdrive channel. I used my Boss FDR-1 pedal for reverb and vibrato with excellent results and the volume was good while playing with the rest of the band.
A nice small amp. It's not particularly light. My Vox AD30VT-XL is considerably lighter and has finer control over the output. This amp has a nice consistent tone and less controls to fiddle with. its not a Blues Jr. or a '59 Bass Man by any means but it not a bad amp. I need more time with it to have a complete opinion but the first impression was good.
