This Godin SD 22 Midnight Blue (Maple Neck) shipped with this Godin VBGAC Performance Gig Bag not mentioned in the description! Also, it is assembled in New Hampshire from wood parts handcrafted in Canada like the other Godin SD models. Godin is a Canadian company.
As of January 2011 Amazon has several different colors and choice of rosewood or maple neck. Prices varied widely for these combinations. I picked up the Midnight Blue Maple Neck much cheaper than the other combinations (301 US dollars). The Godin web site still has the SD 22 listed in its Performance series, but brochure that shipped with my guitar does not mention the SD in the Godin Performance series (their lowest priced models that includes the SD), so the SD 22 may not be in production anymore. The serial number on mine appears to indicate a 2009 manufacture date, so these could have been in the warehouse awhile. Amazon is listing a Godin SD 22 N-Tune Electric Guitar, Midnight Blue, Rosewood Fingerboard with Gigbag with a chambered body and on board tuner that may be replacing this model. The new Godin Session Electric Guitar - Blackburst SG RN model introduced in 2010 may be replacing it as well, or the very similar Exit 22 model may have proved easier to sell.
I am novice guitar player and this is the second electric guitar I've purchased, the first being a Korean made Gibson Epiphone Stratocaster in 1990. I tried learning on my own for a few years and then loaned the guitar and amp to a friend so her teenage son could practice with it. That was about 12 years ago and I haven't seen it since!
After researching this purchase to death, I bought a guitar brand I had never heard of before. The reason: Made in America/Canada and the description indicated this would be an easy player and great for a beginner, and the HSS pickup configuration offered variety and easy upgrades if I get good enough to warrant that. Also, I had hopes quality control would be greater than in a third world Asian assembly shop. And how often do we Americans get to walk-the-talk and buy Made in America (with Canadian parts!) to keep jobs here?
I think it is a great value at 300 bucks, but Amazon prices on the SD seem to vary a lot. I haven't had big issues with losing the tuning while practicing, but I recall getting a greater variety of tone from the various pickup combinations on my Epiphone and the pickups might need upgrading someday. Better pickups might make this a five star item for the price. I am playing through the Fender Mustang I Electric Guitar Amplifier I bought at the same time (I like the guitar, I love the amp and it's effects).
Just a nitpick, but the Midnight Blue is a little too dark to show off the color unless you are in a very brightly lit room. The documentation leaves a lot to be desired, as there is no information about the electronics at all, and I could not find anything on the Godin site either. The maple/poplar tone wood combination appears to be an economy design and may or may not be a liability, I just do not have the experience to offer an informed opinion on that. The version with the on-board tuner might be worth checking out if priced similarly.
A beginner can get a new Asian manufactured Squier by Fender Standard Strat Maple, Candy Apple Red, or a Squier by Fender Affinity Strat Rosewood, Metallic Blue or a Squier by Fender BulletStrat w/Trem, Brown Sunburst, or an Epiphone SG Special Electric Guitar, Cherry or an Epiphone LP Special II Les Paul Collection Electric Guitar, Ebony or try a used Danelectro Modified Factory Spec Model 59 "M" Electric Guitar - Black or Mexcian Fender or other such model for around $200-$300. Or, take the path less traveled and give one of these North American made instruments a try.

Update: After five weeks of ownership, I had a tech set this up with heavier strings and after a truss rod adjustment and intonation. It sounds much better than it shipped.

The SD 22 combines the easy feel of a short scale with the added snap of a rock maple neck. The short scale reduces string tension, which provides easy string bending and augments the low frequency response. The compact feel of the neck and the diagonal radius carved into the body produces exceptional balance and comfort. In short, this guitar is fun to play, and lends itself to classic rock and R&B sounds.

Maple and Poplar Body
The SD 22 is constructed with a blend of two tonewoods. A center of silver leaf maple serves as an anchor for the neck and is flanked by poplar sidepieces, resulting in Godin's stated goal of making electrics that begin with a great acoustic sound. Solid body instruments may not produce much in the way of volume, but make no mistake, wood weight and density, type (and quality) of the neck/body attachment, type of bridge and nut material all have an impact on that final sound.
One Godin GHB1 humbucker and two Godin GS1 single-coil pickups, along with a five-way switch for serious tonal options.
